WHY DO WE EXIST ?
"The Crosby Collective exists to provide a platform that enables dreamers and doers to develop their vision for the world they want to create." Tyrone Curran
ONCE UPON A TIME...
In 2018, four people sat around a table with a cup of something hot. They didn't know it at the time, but this was to be the start of The Crosby Collective. The conversation on that day went that community spaces were disappearing and that with them so was the community. They knew for sure that one thing would bring people together, cake and coffee. All they really needed was place with some tables for people to gather.
Elsewhere in Scunthorpe, another community was becoming frustrated with the lack of space. It may or may not surprise you to know that although Scunthorpe is known for being a Steel town, we have a creative scene that is calling out for a place to belong.
It's taken two years of trial and error (and a lot of house hunting), but finally we've got a place to call home. In September 2020 we will open our doors to the community. We believe that by incorporating workshop spaces into an unused Library we will take learning to a new level. It will allow businesses to grow, and give opportunities for the community to learn something new; from pottery to upholstery, from sewing to cooking and there's even space for a Coffee Shop!
When you first walk in you'll see Good Coffee. Our coffee shop is dedicated to serving Coffee that's good in more ways than one, ethically sourced, roasted and brewed to ensure that you get a cup of coffee that tastes good and is good to the Planet too. We're also proud to display our members products, so if you're looking for that perfect locally made gift, come and see what we've got. Or you can take a look now by heading to our Online Shop
If you venture in a little further, you'll find our table. The centre-point of everything we do, this is where we gather to discuss ideas, meet new friends and work alongside each other. Bring your drink and come sit with us, see what everyones up to and and get involved!
It doesn't stop there, we've got four workshop spaces including;
A brand new industrial Kitchen is designed to host cooking workshops for up to four people. It's also a space to allow food business start-ups to trial their idea. Most importantly, it's where all our sweet treats are made!
Our Textiles area allows you to do everything fabric, you can design a pattern, print it onto fabric and turn it into a bag if your heart desired! This is also where you will find our Resident business TEX Scunthorpe who are more than willing to help you repair, up-cycle and even host regular workshops!
The Photography Studio allows budding Photographers and Videographers to use a professional setting for a fraction of the cost, allowing them to achieve a higher standard of professionalism without the cost of renting a venue.
Finally we have the Workshop, if it's messy, it's here. You find another of our resident Businesses here, SIT Scunthorpe. Ahmad has over forty years of experience re-upholstering furniture and is dedicated to giving old furniture a new life. SIT also hosts regular workshops so you can learn how to upholster your own furniture. We have an incredible Jewellery making area here too, allowing people to make their own jewellery alongside some of the most talented Jewellery-makers in Northern Lincolnshire. Finally, you need to see the machinery in this place! CNC Machines, Laser Cutters and 3D Printers, taking whatever you're making to a new level.
WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE?
A makerspace is a physical location where people gather to co-create, share resources and knowledge, work on projects, network, and build. They help intermediate and advanced users develop their skills and creativity. Their activity promotes development of skills needed for prosperity and social mobility.
The Crosby Collective was developed by Oasis Hub Henderson Avenue and made possible by funding from the Big Lottery Fund and Community Led Community Development (CLLD) Fund.
Oasis is fluid in nature, meaning that whilst there is a definite goal, how we get there is flexible. We’re not about hierarchy, we believe that people coming together to create uplifting businesses, spaces and experiences to benefit the community should be valued, enabled and embraced.
The Crosby Collective started in 2018 with a concept Coworking Space at Crosby One Centre. In early 2020 we will be launching a space where members will have exclusive access to the first Co-working/Makerspace in North Lincolnshire.
Our ethos is based upon:
- Passion to include everyone
- Desire to treat everyone equally, respecting differences
- Commitment to healthy and open relationships
- A deep sense of hope that things can change and be transformed
- A sense of perseverance to keep going for the long haul
